Apparel

Carrying the right clothing on your backpacking trips not only keeps you comfortable but also keeps you alive.  Using lightweight materials and thoughtful designs, it’s possible to achieve the functionality without the weight.

Polartec Micro-Grid Hoodie

A micro-grid hoodie is a staple whether you’re on the trail or off.  They’re comfortable and allow for a good range of motion.  While a little heavy for longer trips, the material works well when you’re static or active.

Silnylon Rain Pullover

A featherweight and reliable waterproof solution that there’s no reason to leave behind.  At only 3.25 ounces and the size of an orange, this jacket won’t get in your way.  Made of silnylon, you don’t have to worry about it wetting out or ever needing DWR reapplied.

Alpha Direct Pullover

An Alpha Direct pullover can replace your fleece at half the weight.  The Alpha Direct material forms an airy mesh that doesn’t hold in heat when you’re active.  When you need more warmth, it pairs well with a hardshell to provide more insulation.  I haven’t found the hooded version (4.3 oz) to provide much warmth, making me prefer the mock neck (3.9 oz) design.
